A girl who cannot afford sanitary pads and does not attend school during her menstrual period will miss approximately two weeks of class each three-month school term. By the time she finishes 8th grade she may have missed 18 weeks of school – more than one full term! During the four years of high school, she will miss 24 weeks of class or the equivalent of two full terms! Many girls drop out of school simply because they know they won’t be able to perform well when they miss so many days of instruction.
The Umoja Project has partnered with HEART Sanitary Towels to provide adolescent girls with all the necessary supplies. Only $5 per year provides a year’s supply of sanitary towels, allowing girls to stay in school full-time and complete their education.
